Third Open CLIL Intensive Workshop | Pune

The Third CLIL Open Intensive Training Workshop happened at Symbiosis International University, Pune from August 6 to August 10, 2018. These workshops, which are free to attend for all eligible participants, are aimed at teaching the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) pedagogical approach to in-service and pre-service teachers. To ensure geographical diversity and access, the first two workshops were conducted in Pondicherry and Chandigarh respectively.

The Pune workshop featured trainers from our partner university in Spain, the La Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha. Dr Ana Maria Relaño Pastor and Dr Helena Dorothy Aikin Araluce both have vast experience in implementing CLIL in Spain. They led the participants through such basic ideas as how to develop material and structure units of work using CLIL. Understanding that CLIL is new to India, the trainers also showed the participant the possible challenges they could anticipate in implementing this approach in their classrooms.

From the India front, we were in the very capable hands of Prof Sangeeta Pant and Dr Parul Sood, both from the School of Education at Chitkara University, Punjab. They led the trainees on a session focused on ensuring comprehension in the classroom. The team from Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Karnataka presented on how best to assess children in a CLIL classroom, marking key distinctions between evaluation and assessment. Dr Mumtaz Begum of Pondicherry University shed light on active learning strategies in the Indian classroom, and showed us how to encourage HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) in students.

The workshop was peppered with visits to the Pune Police Public School and the beautiful campus of Symbiosis at the Lavale hilltop. The workshop concluded with the teacher-participants making presentations on how they could use CLIL in their classrooms, featuring lesson plans and common strategies.

For the next workshop in this series, the CLIL@India Project heads back south. The Fourth (and Final) CLIL Open Intensive Training Workshop will be held in the coastal town of Manipal, Karnataka in the second week of December.
