Second Open CLIL Intensive Workshop | Chandigarh

An enriching, interactive, 5-day open CLIL Intensive Course was hosted by Chitakara University to provide in-service teachers for Government and Private Primary schools as well as educationists from the region, an understanding of the CLIL concept as a pedagogy to foster bilingualism in the Indian context. The workshop focussed on formulating activity-focussed CLIL lesson plans and their evaluation after an introduction to CLIL methodology, its need and adaptation in India.
The workshop witnessed the presence of prominent academicians from both National and International platforms. Scholars with expertise in CLIL, Dr. Luciana Pedrazzini and Andrea Nava from Universita Degli Studi Di Milano, shared enriching insights into various aspects related to preparing to teach using CLIL methodology.
Although the focus was to train the Indian teachers and graduates on how to use CLIL methodology, there was a lot to take home from the Workshop for the international scholars. They gained an in-depth understanding of teaching in Indian schools through the School Tours that Chitakara University had organized, the practical aspects of multilingualism in India, as well of the rich culture that India has to offer.

The workshop was opened with a powerful session on the crucial topic- “Multilingualism in Punjab”, where Ms. Harjinder Kaur expressed a poignant concern of today’s education system where the focus is only on developing professional skills using English as a medium of instruction, leaving regional and native languages to take a back seat.
International scholars from our Partner Universities- Dr. Luciana Pedrazzini and Dr. Andrea Nava, from University of Milan, involved the teachers in a task-oriented session aimed at understanding better, the practical application of CLIL methodology in a classroom. They conducted classes on Comprehension Strategies and Activities in CLIL and Methods to Enhance Interaction in a CLIL Classroom through group work and brain storming sessions and introduced them to creative teaching tools like Dictogloss. The participants were also given opportunities to share their teaching methods, leading to a healthy exchange of ideas and practices.
The workshops also focussed on development and creation of CLIL lesson plans to teach Punjabi and Hindi. The session provided hands-on experience to all participants to look into academic vocabulary, structures, syntax and activities in their respective target language.
Professors from Chitkara University introduced participants to Bloom’s Taxonomy to enable framing of teaching objectives and learning outcomes. Sessions also equipped the participants with planning, preparing, evaluating and monitoring teaching through CLIL methodology.
Research associates from Manipal Academy of Higher Education shared with the participants, tests and methods of assessing the language and content knowledge of the students through simple, reliable and effective tools after being taught in CLIL methodology.
Dr. Mumtaz Begum discussed Active Learning Strategy and CLIL while Dr. Vaishali Jundre explained the Pedagogical Analysis of Content through 4Cs and 3As of CLIL, emphasizing keeping in mind the different types of learners.
The Workshop at Chitkara University adopted unique and innovative tools to obtain instant feedback on the sessions conducted such as the session-o-meter and live voting.
All the events were followed with vibrant performances showcasing the rich culture and heritage of Punjab and India.
