CLIL@India a 3-year project co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, began in 2016 and was successfully completed in 2019.
A consortium of 7 Universities from India and Europe dedicated to developing a new model of bilingual education by introducing Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) as an innovative pedagogical practice in the Indian education system to preserve the nation’s multilingualism.

PARTNERS
Seven Universities from Europe and India come together in developing and adapting the CLIL approach in India.
Our partnership with Università Degli Studi Di Milano, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha and Latvijas Universitāte, brings in the best of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach from Europe. The Universities facilitate the imparting, sharing and transfer of knowledge and best practices of CLIL approach between European and Indian academicians, resulting in the creation of innovative professional profiles with in-depth skills in CLIL both in the academia and society.
Our partnership in India comprises a network of four universities geographically spread out in the Subcontinent- Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Chitkara University Symbiosis International University and Pondicherry University. Under the leadership of MAHE, the universities engage in gaining expertise in the CLIL approach, study its adaptation to the Indian context and further attempt to integrate it as part of curricula in the Indian Higher Education Institutes.
In addition, select schools in Manipal, Pune, Chandigarh and Pondicherry as well as NGOs are important stakeholders in the project contributing towards the promotion of bilingual education in India through the CLIL approach.

Prof Dr Neeta Inamdar

Prof. Neeta Inamdar who holds a Jean Monnet Chair has been a driving force of Manipal Centre for European Studies (MCES) through the decade. She has led it since its inception in 2009 and has the credit of building it to what is today – a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. Though interested in various aspects of European economy, society and culture, she is more drawn towards education in Europe – both school and higher education as reflected in the projects led by her in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Internationalization of Higher Education and Bologna project. With a hands-on experience in building international collaborations, she presently guides PhD students in the field of cross-border education and acts as a consultant to a few other universities in their internationalization efforts. She has also co-edited a book with Dr H Vinod Bhat on Internationalization of Higher Education – The Dynamics of Educational Ecology.
Prof Inamdar has efficaciously developed collaborations with several European universities in the last decade and this has resulted in the enhanced mobility of students and staff of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) through Erasmus Plus Credit Mobility KA 107. She has the incredible success of obtaining an astonishing amount of around €1.5 million grant from the European Union for diverse academic projects. Over the years, Prof Inamdar has also extended her expertise by participating in various consortia across India and Europe and has developed MCES into a Centre of learning and resource. Being open to ideas, she has now developed a strong team of young European Studies scholars who are presently building the multidisciplinary European Studies program and the Centre.

Ajinkya has degrees in journalism, development studies, and philosophy from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences at Mumbai. Previously he has worked with development sector non-profits in India, and his work has taken him across rural India and Ethiopia. He is now the Executive Director of the CLIL@India Project.

Dr. philol. Gunta Rozina holds a position of Full Professor with Tenure at the University of Latvia. At present, her administrative commitment is related to running the Department of English Studies at the University. Having gained the Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Minnesota (USA), Dr.philol. Rozina has broadened her scientific experience and conducted extensive research in applied pragmatics at the University.
Her scientific and academic input is focused on examining the linguo-pragmatic, sociopragmatic and pragma-linguistic aspects of communication. As a senior researcher, Dr. philol. Rozina has contributed significantly to implementing innovative approaches both to her academic work at the University of Latvia and to her research work in Latvia and beyond. She has profound research and quality assurance experience in the implementation of domestic and international projects.

Indra Karapetjana (Dr. Philol) is a full Professor in linguistics at the University of Latvia. She is a scientific expert in the field of Humanities and Arts – Linguistics and Literary Science – with the Latvian Council of Science. Her research interests lie in the field of Applied Linguistics, in particular (critical) discourse analysis, ESP, CLIL and EMI. She is an author of numerous international publications and has lectured on topical issues in applied linguistics in the U.S.,Turkey, Portugal, Lithuania, the U.K., and Bulgaria.
She was a 2010 U.S. Department of State fellow at the New York University, Multinational Institute of American Studies, Institute on U.S. Culture and Society.

My area of expertise lies within the field of intercultural education inbilingual schools. I am currently working on project-based educational models where I explore the interdisciplinary dimension of CLIL with special attention to establishing relational links between the different school subjects and learners´ lives and communities at local, national and international levels.I have conducted teacher training seminars and workshops on CLIL methodology, intercultural education and creative learning in several European universities as well as at ITESO university (Guadalajara, Mexico) and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) (Karnataka, India), where I was a visiting researcher in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

Ana María Relaño holds a BA in English Studies from the University of Granada, an MA in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a PhD in English Studies (Applied Linguistics) from the University of Granada. She has been a visiting professor and director of the program Spanish as a Heritage Language at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona, a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego, and a predoctoral fellow at the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies (CCIS) at the University of California, San Diego.
She has also been a visiting fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, and more recently at the University of Bristol, U.K. Currently, she is senior lecturer at the Department of Modern Philology (English Studies), at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in Spain, where she has taught, among other subjects, Applied Linguistics, CLIL, Pragmatics, and Discourse Analysis. Her research interests includes narrative, emotion and identity; language socialization of Latino communities in the U.S.; sociolinguistic ethnography; language education of immigrant communities in Spain; and most recently bi/multilingual education in Spain. Dr Luciana Pedrazzini

Luciana Pedrazzini is an Assistant Professor in English and TESOL in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Milan. Her research interests are mainly in the areas of lexicogrammar, second language acquisition, multilingualism, content and language integrated learning (CLIL), the use of English as a Lingua Franca and teacher education.
She holds courses in Language Teaching Methodology and Second Language Acquisition for graduates, pre-service and in-service teachers.She also has a long experience in planning and running training courses for in-service CLIL teachers. On behalf of her department, she has forged a strong relationship with the Lombardy Local Education Authority to promote projects for the teaching and learning of modern foreign languages, including the dissemination of good practice and experimentation.
She also collaborates with universities in Lombardy supporting training programmes and local projects addressing the needs of in-service CLIL teachers and ensures quality in their teaching in terms of curriculum planning and expected outcomes. She has supervised PhD research projects and MA dissertations on CLIL issues (Scaffolding the Language of CLIL History; Form-focused instruction in CLIL; The teacher’s use of English in a science lesson; the use of Academic English in CLIL discourse). At the moment, she is involved in a longitudinal research project aimed at assessing the learning outcomes of CLIL classes in six lower secondary schools in northern Italy. Dr Vaishali Jundre

She completed her Ph.D. from the Symbiosis International (Deemed University) in 2017. Her research focuses on the phonological, lexical and grammatical problems of Arab learners. She also heads the corporate training wing of the institute.
She heads the academic initiatives of the English Language Teaching Institute of Symbiosis since 2007. As the Deputy Director of the institute, she leads a team of 50+ ELT teachers. She has initiated and successfully implemented innovative teaching methodologies at ELTIS. The institute conducts courses for international and Indian students. More than 8500 students learn at ELTIS-SIFIL annually.ELTIS is known for its activity-based teaching methods and Dr. Vaishali has steered this movement. She introduced many new curricular and co-curricular activities in the academic calendar thus breaking the classroom monotony. She is one of the team members in designing a diploma for ELTIS, the Diploma in Practical English and Life Skills (DPELS) for Indian students. This programme is running successfully since 2011. She has played a vital role in the re-development of courses for Spoken English run at the institute under the brand name ‘Speakfast’.
She is a professional teacher trainer and also the Team Leader of Speaking Examiners for Cambridge Assessment English exams at ELTIS. ELTIS as a centre has 20 Speaking Examiners for General as well as Business English exams.
She also administers the initiatives of the foreign languages wing called Symbiosis Institute of Foreign and Indian Languages (SIFIL). The SIFIL team comprises 40+ teachers for six languages – Chinese, Japanese and Korean and French, German and Spanish.
She has presented papers at various national conferences. She has been a Convener of 9 National Conferences at ELTIS.
Dr Mumtaz Begum

Dr Mumtaz Begum is a ‘United Kingdom – Commonwealth Academic Fellow (2013)’ deputed to Liverpool Johns Moore University, Liverpool by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). She has been awarded Associateship for thee spells from the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. Dr Begum also headed the School of Education in the Tamil Nadu Open University. For her untiring services to the profession of Teaching, she was crowned “Best Teacher Award” twice. She is a visiting faculty and a panellist in Advanced Research Committees of Higher Learning Centres.
Dr Begum’s research publications and specialization are in the areas of quality issues in education, open and distance learning, vocational education, neuro-linguistic programming, special education and women’s education. She has made her presence felt in many notable international and national conferences as Chair Person and presented technical papers on wide themes, some of which were declared as Best Papers.
Dr Sangeeta Pant

Dr Sangeeta Pant is the driving force of Teacher Education Program at Chitkara University. She is responsible for bringing 21st century learner focussed Teacher Education program to the region. In her 26 years of experience in Education, Dr. Sangeeta has nurtured many Education Leaders, researchers and teachers who are placed in top positions of leading schools across the globe. She has delivered sessions and workshops for aspiring teachers and in-service teachers on Developing Reading and Writing Skills, Critical Issues for Tomorrow’s Teachers’ and Numeracy Skills at Primary level. Dr. Sangeeta is also the coordinator for Chitkara Centre for academic excellence. Under this she organizes orientation programmes for newly recruited faculty of Chitkara University Punjab and H.P to sharpen their teaching skills and introduce the work culture of Chitkara.
Dr Sangeeta has been actively involved in developing many effective strategies towards creating a Hindi language rich environment in educational institutions and society as a whole. She is the Editor of Hindi Section of Pratibimb magazine published by Chitkara University and a journal called Issues and Ideas in Education. She is a well known name in the region when it comes to writing enriching articles for Hindi Newspapers.
Dr Sangeeta is a member of many reputed organisations and offices working in the field of education ranging from State Institute of Education which works towards the development of Diploma in Elementary Education syllabus to the Linguistic department of Punjabi University, Patiala and External advisory committee of “Equal Opportunity Cell of Kumaun University, Nanital.
Dr Sangeeta is well known in the field of Education research. She is credited with writing and presenting more than 25 research papers in national and international journals. She was invited to present her paper on Developing Processes of making an Efficient Engineer at IEEE International Conference on MOOC, Innovation and Technology in Education in September 2013. She has also scripted many chapters of the books titled Internal Quality Assurance: Developing Processes for positive outcome and Preparing Better Teachers: A Doctrine on Micro Teaching. She is also credited with framing a Unit on Management of Human Recourses and Instructional Planning, Contemporary Aspects on Institutional Management for IGNOU, New Delhi.

An aspiring Linguist, teacher and trainer, Deepti Sreeram did MPhil in Linguistics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi and M.A. in Linguistics from English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) Hyderabad. She has previously worked with Tehelka, a national magazine as Features Lead reporter and Editor and has worked with Pratham, the largest education based NGO in Asia. Her area of interests include sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, gender and politics.

A native Kannada speaker, an avid French learner and a beginner in Latvian language, Amrutha Yathish has a flair for learning foreign and Indian languages. She has done M.A. in European Studies at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), as a part of which, on receiving Erasmus+ Scholarship, completed 2 semesters of study as an exchange student at the University of Latvia. She has a keen interest in the dynamics of language learning and teaching and looks forward to her journey as Research Associate in the CLIL@India Project.

She aspires to find the meeting point where different systems of cultures and politics engage allowing progressive systemic change for the benefit of people, especially in the Indian education system.
